CHAPTER SEVEN

The next day, Arlee made all of her rounds in a steady, efficient manner. It wasn’t until she came to her last client of the day, Mr. Fine, that she began to feel a bit anxious. But anxious, or not, she would have to keep her composure and do her job. She entered the quiet kitchen and, after stacking her utensils and containers on top of the island, went over to the sink to wash her hands. As she stood there rubbing the soap over them, she thought about the phone calls she received earlier, first from Rafe who thanked her for last night, and for bringing him and Neisha together. No sooner had that conversation ended when Neisha called to confess how much she liked Rafe—a lot; and that there would be no need for a chaperone the next time.

Arlee couldn’t be happier for her friend, and knew without a doubt that Rafe would be good for her. She paused from drying her hands and considered the question: Could this be a happy-ever-after? Instantly that phrase conjured up a familiar face with brown eyes and an attractive mouth that would send your heart racing when it turned up into a smile one could only describe as, charming, alluring, sultry, soul-stirring… No! She closed her eyes in an endeavor to keep that anxiousness back; to lock such thoughts away somewhere in her deep recesses. Think Neisha and Rafe. Not Wyck’d, Wyck’d, Wyck’d. As if three silent whispers of his name could make him appear, the kitchen doors folded open. When she turned toward them, she felt somewhat annoyed that she couldn’t control that surge of excitement when he came through them.

“Hi,” he greeted softly.

“Hi,” was her no-big-deal reply as she walked back to the island and concentrated on her work.

On his way to the refrigerator, he glanced over the strips of chicken breasts, bell pepper, and other ingredients she was unpacking. He opened the door and retrieved himself a bottle of water. “Would you like one?” he held it out.

“No,” she looked up. “Thank-you.”

He closed the door and smiled. “I really enjoyed last night.”

“I—I did, too.”

“Did your friend get home in one piece?”

That caused her to chuckle a little. “She did. Actually, I just received a call from both of them thanking me, and that my chaperone services are no longer needed.”

“I guess you’re quite the matchmaker.”

She just shrugged and began to pull the cellophane from over the chicken. “I didn’t do that much.”

He fell silent and watched as she placed the strips of chicken on a plate. “Arlee, when I get back from New York, would you like to have dinner with me? Maybe somewhere more formal and quiet?”

She took her time placing that last strip of chicken beside the others in order to think of an answer that wouldn’t come off as outright rejection. When she did look up, her only reply was paralyzing silence.

“I take it by that long pause that you’re going to remind me about your dating policy.
